Bryden was her second husband. First was Major John Crichton Stuart McDouall who died in 1951 and they had 4 children.
John Crichton Stuart McDouall was a commissioned officer in the Royal Corps of Signals. He graduated from the Royal Military Academy Woolwich in 1939, and spent part of the war as a General Staff Officer at Scottish Command. In 1946 he was promoted to Major, attended the Staff College in Camberley in 1950, and posted to the Middle East HQ in Ismailia, Egypt. He was killed in the riots in 1951 during the troubles that preceded the Suez Canal Crisis.
Dorothy married Major John Hewgill Anderson Bryden M.B.E., son of Col. Ronald Anderson Bryden D.S.O., M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. and Doris Mary Smith, on 2 Feb 1954. (Major John Hewgill Anderson Bryden M.B.E. was born on 30 Apr 1920 in Shoeburyness.)
