From Kevin Rogan; The Gale family were Coal Estate managers for Lord Lowther, who had mines all over his land . The Gales were also merchants and sea captains to America. George Gale married Martha Warner Washington Gale. She was grandmother of the first president of America George Washington and is buried in our Town centre church St Nicholas' (patron saint of Sailors) cemetery. This church was built by Elijah Gale on behalf of Lord Lowther. Lord Lowther also paid for the building of the church in James Street by the Gale family as well. Descendents of the Gales make interesting reading. One was among those who invented Esperanto and a later descendent is a writer of best seller mystery adventures, who I have written to about his ancestors.
