Alfred Walter Tree
- Born: ~1834
- Marriage (1): Hypatia Florence Bateman on 12 Feb 1882 in St Michael's, Wood Green, Edmonton, Essex
- Marriage (2): Unknown
Notes:
Could be called Alfred (marriage record on ancestry). Valentine from Anne G-P. Wendy says definately Alfred from finding wedding record.
Wedding cert; 12 Feb 1882. St Michael's Wood Green. Hypatia Florence Bateman (age 27) spinster/ Alfred Tree (48) widower. His profession: Actor. His father's (Thomas) occ: Dealer in Leather. Witnesses completely unrelated names, not a Bateman in sight. As the Batemans seem to spent a large amount of time being witnesses at weddings looks as though they might have given Hypatia and her groom the cold shoulder or perhaps they didn't know about the wedding ?
Ann G-P family tree has him as 'Valentine Selley' (see Selby below) , Actor.
Info from Jean; the family are on the 1891 census under SELBY The family consists of Alfred and 2 of his children from a previous marriage and the 2 he had with Hypatia! 1891 RG12 1091 189 8 Goffs Lane Cheshunt SELBY Alfred W 48 Retired Actor London SELBY Hopatia F 35 London
SELBY Florence E 20 London SELBY Hubert B 18 London
SELBY Valentine BK 8 Essex SELBY Ethel H 5 Essex
and (dont understand the below, doesnt compute); 1901 RG13 98 132 30 Gt Marlboro Street SELBY Alfred Walter 56 widow actor London SELBY Florence E 24 Kensington Why is he widow in 1901 if wife didn't die until 1910 ?
From Wendy; this could explain the Selby/Tree confusion and why we cannot find Hypatia on the 1901 census and why Arthur delares himself a widower. Not a very pleasant finding I am afraid: Actual entry is reproduced: Hertford Assizes Alfred Walter Tree age 54 dealer. Date of warrant: 16 June 1897 When received into custody: 26 June 1897 Offence: Unlawfully attempting to have unlawful and carnal knowledge of Ethel Hypatia Tree a girl under the age of 13 years at Cheshunt on 16 May 1897,22 May 1897 and 23 May 1897. Guilty. 18 calendar months Hard Labour. Also by googling found this from Bristol Times and Mirror Monday 28 June 1897: At Hertford Assizes on Saturday Justice Matthews sentenced Alfred Walter Tree alias Selby an elderly man of good position to 18 months hard labout in attempting to assault his own daughter age 11. The prisoner denied the charge in toto.
Alfred married Hypatia Florence Bateman, daughter of Dr. Henry Charles# Bateman FRCS, LSA and Elizabeth Helen (pref Helen)# Senior, on 12 Feb 1882 in St Michael's, Wood Green, Edmonton, Essex. (Hypatia Florence Bateman was born on 11 Aug 1854 in Islington, London and died on 2 Jan 1910 in Runcorn, Cheshire.)
Alfred next married Unknown.
