Willam# de Arches

  • Marriage (1): Unknown

bullet  Notes:

This lines goes up to Rolf, 1st Duke of Normandy (911-927), one of whose descendants was Wm the Conqueror.

However it is not precisely clear who is who ! One tree shows this Wm as a son of Osbern and Ivetta. Another however appears to say that Beatrice's father was Adam and HIS father was Wm, and doesn't mention any Osbern's until 5 or 6 generations further back.

'Wigglesworth Manor' by G.Wigglesworth and D.Kaneps;
"Thorp Arch (Wetherby) was the official residence of Osbern de Arches who was given 66 manors by William the Conqueror including Wigglesworth". The name Arches comes from Arques which is ~5km inland from Dieppe. Osbern was High Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1100.

'Wigglesworth Hall' by G.Wigglesworth;
"Peter de Arches had been at Arnford in the first third of the 12th century ... Arnford is between Hellifield and the Ribble, opposite Wiggleworth. The Arches of Arnford and Wigglesworth remained powerful and influential, of high social standing, many of their members attaining knightly rank".

From: 'Houses of Benedictine nuns: Priory of Nun Monkton', A History of the County of York: Volume 3 (1974), pp. 122-23. URL: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=36230. ;
Nun Monkton Priory; This house appears from a confirmation by Archbishop Henry Murdac (1147-53), (fn. 1) to have been founded in the reign of Stephen by William de Arches and Ivetta his wife, who granted to God and St. Mary and to Maud their daughter and the nuns of Monkton 6 carucates of land in Monkton, and half a carucate in Hammerton, and the churches of ' Torp ' (Thorp Arch) (fn. 2) Hammerton, ' Escham' (Askham Richard), and ' Kirkby juxta Useburn' (Kirkby Wharfe). The latter church Elias de Ho had granted at the counsel of William de Arches.
The way in which the name of William and Ivetta's daughter, Maud, is introduced can only mean that she was prioress of the house - this is NOT the Maud shown below, as dates don't match.

Willam# married.
