James Sunter
- Born: 1831, Greenhow Hill, Pateley Bridge, N Yorks
- Marriage (1): Alice Austin Q3 1866 in Skipton, N.Yorks
- Died: 12 Nov 1918, Fairfield, Liverpool aged 87
- Buried: 16 Nov 1918, St. Andrew's Church, Aysgarth, N.Yorks
Notes:
Probably his mother is not Ellen as she didn't marry Jacob till '40. This would also explain age gap between Maria and Jacob jnr. Alternatively might not even be Jacob's son - could be nephew or even younger brother, or could Eleanor's child from earlier marriage, as she was Sunter. LATER; John Rogers research shows him as son of JSS's first wife Ann, also further info from John such as precise birth date, death date, marriage etc.
1841 Census; (v hard to read). Living, aged 10 in Ivelet, Muker, Yorks with (presumably) father and step mother and a sibling. Ivelet is a moor due north of Muker.
In 1851 there are a number of possibles inc one born in Bewerley, another in Carperby and another in Melbecks.
In 1881 there are a number of possibles inc; 1834, Carperby, living West Derby, Lancs 1827, Bainbridge, living Askrigg 1835, Greenhow Hill, living Embsay 1833, Hawes, living High Abbotside 1826, Melbecks, living Reeth.
HOWEVER; Jayne Dinsdale says he is actually the son of Bryan Sunter; Thought I ought to give you a bit of info about the above (1831-1918) James Sunter. The one who died in Fairfield Liverpool 1918, previously living in West Derby was born in Carperby the son of Bryan Sunter. Bryan Sunter was the son of Elizabeth Metcalfe whose father was BryanMetcalfe. Bryan Sunter was a non conformist and his children were baptised all together in a methodist service - I can't remember where and unfortunately at this moment the office is upside down so I can't find the paperwork but I think I found the record in the national archives collection. My interest is in the Metcalfe family and also in village history - we live in carperby. There is a plaque in the village on a house now called St Cecilias house which James Sunter paid to renovate in 1903 and next door to it he built a house which he called Fairfield. I believe James Sunter at some time lived at Bowesgarth because we own the field behind that used to belong to that house and it is referred to as 'Suntersgarth'. The Warren was where my husband lived as a child and where your Sunters lived - who were from Swaledale - just over the moor behind Carperby and several miners from Swaledale came to work the mines near Carperby and then settled here. Warren House is as you see in your photo and the warren itself is behind it - not across the road, that is Ballowfield. The Warren is enclosed by a high wall and the hill - Ladyhill is in the centre of it - there are many paintings of Ladyhill as it is a local landmark. The Gate House which is where your Sunters lived before they moved to the Warren is nearer to Carperby and has recently been sold so if you do an internet search you will see a photo of it in the property for sale ads. If you already know all this then forgive me for repeating otherwise I hope it helps you.
James married Alice Austin, daughter of William Austin and Ellen Williamson, Q3 1866 in Skipton, N.Yorks. (Alice Austin was born in 1825 in Broughton, Skipton, N Yorks, christened on 28 Aug 1825 in Broughton Hall Catholic Church, Broughton, Skipton, N Yorks and died Q1 1894 in Skipton, N.Yorks.)
