From Wendy; Times July 4 1883 Obituary: "The Rev Thomas Irvin 45 years vicar of the parish of Oremsby in Cleveland recently died at the advanced age of 88. Born in Scarborough on 17 May 1795 the son of the Rev Thomas Irvin vicar of Hackness and Harwood Dale, Thomas Irvin was beginning to study for the medical profession when Archbishop Harcourt suggested thate he should read for holy orders. In 1818 he was ordaiend deacon and became curate of Whitby: in 1819 was ordained priest and in 1820 he became curate of Scarborough. Mr Irvin also assisted his father at Hackness and Harwood Dale. In 1823 he went to Barmston in Holderness as curate in charge and was also curate of Ulrome. On June 23 of that year he married Phoebe Maria daughter of Mr Charles Haswell RN. In 1829 he became vioar of Ulrome and in the same year he was appointed headmaster of Thornton Grammar School nearing Pickering to which place he removed from Barstom. In 1836 Archbishope Harcourt (who presented Mr Irvin to Ulrome) presented him to Nafferton and in 1837 appointed him Vicar of Ormesny and perpetual curate of Eston with Normanby. This living he held till his decease." Thomas married Phoebe Maria Haswell on 23 Jun 1823. |
