bullet  Notes:

We know that George was born in ~1779 ('cos of age at death).
And we know he was born in Northants (1841 census).
And we suspect he was from Wellingborough (first child born there and left property there).

Found at http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Baptisms&RecordID=49674 a chr record with the details shown (no mother unfortunately) so it seems fairly certain this is him.
Also found it in Northants CRO - but doesn't give any further info, like wife name.

Checked All Hallows, Wellingb, PR weddings 1769 - 1780 for marriage - no luck

According to Rootsweb posting sent to me by Susan Chance this James married ;
1.Phyliss Garner (1744-1807) in 1786 in Wellingborough. 7 issue
2.Sarah Nobles (nee Lawson) in 1818 at St Giles, Northants.
This later confirmed by Lesley Gyford, who also has second wife showing for him;
Sarah Nobles (nee Lawson) ;; 29 Apr 1764, Wellingborough ; but this year must be wrong ; can't be wedding date ?

Marriage details sent by Lesley;
James Raunds, otp, batchelor and Phillis Garner of the same parish, spinster were married 16th Sept 1766, All Hallows, Wellingborough.

1777 Milita List; Hamfordshoe Hundred ; Wellingborough - <Rand, James, cordwr> drawn before (meaning he was now exempted).

Northants FHS Library burials;
18th Feb 1819 aged 75 at All Hallows, Wellingborough ; I'm presuming for now this is him.
1st May 1824 aged 49 at All Hallows, Wellingborough ; presumably a son.

If the burial above is correct he could be the James Rand chr ~1743 in Cosgrove, Northants, parents (helpfully!) Mr Rand and Mrs Rand.
If so there are other Cosgrove connections;

The word 'Rands' also refers to a cut of leather used to make a shoe. Which can't be a coincidence. Perhaps they changed their name, or maybe they were leather dealing immigrants and so changed their name to anglize themselves ?

Prisoners in the Gaol in and for the County of Northampton 1812; Robert Rands, heretofore of Kislingbury, and late of the Town of Northampton, in the County of Northampton, Shoe-Manufacturer.

There is of course a town of 'Raunds' (pronounced like launder) in Northants originally knowns as Rands. This is near Irthlingborough.

A number of Rands are listed as Mayors and Baliffs of the Town of Northampton at;
