Notes:
Info from Jeremy Archer research. "of York in the parish of St. James, Member for Hanover 1754-55, Member for St. James 1755-56" Wife is presumably a cousin. Died without issue.
Death date from intro to the 'Gale-Morant Papers'. This also says "Having no issue the Jamaican estates of William and Elizabeth Gale (nee Morant) descended to Edward Gregory Morant-Gale (1772-1854) son of Edward Morant, MP for Brokenhurst, and Mary Whitehorne Goddard Morant. After William Gale's death in 1784, trustees managed the estates until about 1795, when Edward Gregory Morant-Gale reached his majority". A large proportion of the papers in the Morant-Gale collection relate to this.
"Some of William Gale's correspondents were men of some distinction ..... two letters involve the rich and powerful Beckford family. Oe is addressed to William Beckford (1760-1844). He was the son and heir of Alderman Wm Beckford (1709-54) who represented London in parliament and was twice Lord Mayor. The younger Beckford was reputedly England's wealthiest son. He was among other things a traveller, author, correspondent, Member of Parliament, collector of books and art objects and builder of the 'gothic' abbey at Fonthill in Wilts. He wrote with brilliance and produced Vathek a romantic novel which was his one masterpiece".
Was in New York on 10 Oct 1768 when he recd a letter from SAMUEL MARTIN of Antigua. Martin commented on Gale's recent visit to Albany and Niagara Falls.
William married Elizabeth Morant on 11 Jan 1753 in Vere, Jamaica. (Elizabeth Morant was born on 20 Feb 1727, died on 14 Jun 1759 and was buried in Vere, Jamaica (see monumental inscription).)
