bullet  Notes:

Have picture of a 'Gladys Edith Mabel xxx" aged 18 months taken in Oct 1890. Think this is her. Last name COULD be Lyon or Sykes, later found marriage record and surname is Syer.

There are 2 possibles on the 1901 census;
Gladys Syer, b~1897 in Surbiton, Pupil in Worthing, Sussex
Gladys M Syer, b~1899 in Kings Lynn, Living St Margaret's, Norfolk.
1st one more likely due to a) location and b) otherwise would only be 16 when got married. Actually when you look at first one age could be 4 or could also be 11, which seems more likely given she is at boarding school. This also ties in roughly with date and age on back of picture.

The Times (no date but he died in 1918); The funeral of Mr Robert Brudenell Carter FRCS took place at West Norwood Cemetery yesterday. The entire service was conducted at the graveside by the Rev F.M.Anderson. The principal mourners were; Dr.Wm Beecher Carter (son) and Mrs Carter, Col W.G.Carter CMG (Cousin), Miss M.L.Carter (cousin), Mrs.Griffiths, Miss Dora Syer (granddaughters) and Miss Alice Brown.
Amongst others attending the service were ...... Mr.C.S.Griffiths....... Among the wreaths from relatives and personal friends was one "in affectionate memory" from The Times and another from the committee, staff and members of the International Cooperative Trade Society, of which Mr Carter was chairman for 19 years and treasurer for 31 years. ........ he was the first - or almost the first - writer for The Times who used a typewriter.

The Register 1939, Occupants of The Old Cottage, Swindon, Cheltenham
Gladys E M Griffiths 25/5/188 Unpaid Domestic Duties/ARP Air Warden
Doris H Locke* 25/6/1890 Nurse Companion
Russell Bell-Syer 08/09/1886 Aircraft/Officer RAF
There was also one other occupant but this is blacked out as asssumed still living (imagine it was a 'domestic')

Was a witness at the wedding of Thomas George-Powell and Ann St John Wright in 1940.

Apr 1940; George Powell/St John Wright wedding; "The wedding took place from the residence of the bride's aunts, Mrs. Griffiths and Mrs.Locke, of The Old Cottage, Swindon". So it sounds like Gladys and Doris shared it ?
She was at the wedding but Cyril wasn't ; so presumably he was abroad ?

Presumably she died sometime in the 1950's (MTG-P has pictures of her he took when aged 10, and she didn't move to Leeds when Cyril did) ........ later ; have July 1963 letter from her brother Lewis (in Perth, Australia) saying "it is almost a month ago since news reached me of the passing of my darling sister". Also says he hasn't seen them for 55 years !

Gladys married Cyril Stephen Griffiths A.I.M.M., A.R.S.M., son of Stephen Lewis# Griffiths and Katharine Isabel# Powis, on 24 Aug 1915 in St Mary Abbotts, Kensington, London. (Cyril Stephen Griffiths A.I.M.M., A.R.S.M. was born on 13 Feb 1882 in Fairthorn, Pelhurst Rd, Ryde, Isle of Wight and died on 5 Feb 1975 in Leeds.)
