Sent to England to be educated at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield. Practised law in Virigina and was appointed JP in 1757. Elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1761, and remained there until 1788.
In 1775 he became a Colonel of the Milita in Westmoreland Co.
Was one of the Signatories to the Declaration of Independence July/August 1776.
Independence was declared on July 2 1776 pursuant to the "Lee Resolution" present to the Continental Congress by Richard Henry Lee of Virigina on June 7th 1776 which read (in part): "Resolved: That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved." Lee was absent from Congress due to his wife's illness, thus Thomas Jefferson was chosen to write the Declaration.
Served as the sixth President of the United States in Congress assembled under the Articles of Confederation, holding office from November 30th 1784 to Nov 22nd 1785.
Richard married Anne Aylett on 3 Dec 1759. (Anne Aylett was born in 1738 and died on 12 Dec 1767.)
