Notes:
Precise date info from John Rogers research.
1851 Census; Living, aged 7 in Askrigg with parents, 2 siblings, grandmother and a lodger (John Pedley, 24, Miner). Occupation; Scholar. PoB here is Ivelet - same as siblings, Ivelet being a moor due North of Muker.
1861 Census; Living, aged 17, at Gate House, Carperby cum Thoresby, Yorks with parents and 2 siblings (but not Jacob jnr). Occupation; Lead Miner.
I'm assuming this is the correct marriage - a James Sunter to an Alice, but date (given birth of first child) and location seem a little odd, possible is wrong - especially given James Sunter in Embsay etc. ..... was wrong, correct one from John B.
In 1871 there are 3 Thomas Sunter's of roughly the right age born and living in Melbecks ! There is also another one born in Greenhow Hill, and living in Embsay. However after finding '81 entry I narrowed down to ; 1871 Census (incorrectly indexed as Smith, but clearly Sunter on form) Living as head, aged 27, at High St., Wolsingham, Durham with (1st) wife and 2 children. Occupation; Coal miner. PoB; Swaledale.
In 1881 there are similar possibles. However, as we can see, he must be this one; Living as head, aged 37, at William St., Auckland Park, Coundon Grange, Durham with (presumably 2nd) wife, 2 children and sister in law Zipporah Sunter (Game Keepers Wife). Occupation; Coal Miner. PoB; Ivelet. Son James enabled me to track down '71 census entry.
1891 Census; Living as head, aged 47, at Blue Row, Stockeld St., Bishop Auckland with 2nd wife and 3 children. Occupation; Retired Coalminer. PoB: Ivelet.
Death record gives YoB as 1845 = match.
Wife is widow by 1901.
Thomas married Alice Percival, daughter of James Percival and Christina Holmes, on 5 Nov 1864 in St.Andrew's, Aysgarth, Yorkshire. (Alice Percival was born Q1 1847 in Carperby, Wensleydale, Yorkshire and died Q4 1878 in Auckland, Durham.)
Thomas next married Jane Hannah Kellett, daughter of Joseph Kellett and Jane Douglass, Q4 1879 in Bishop Auckland, Durham. (Jane Hannah Kellett was born in 1859 in Newfield, Durham, christened on 17 Aug 1862 in St.Andrew's Auckland, Bishop Auckland, Durham and died ~1906.)
