William# Underwood
- Born: 1676
- Marriage (1): Sarah# Bush on 10 Oct 1705 in Luton, Beds
- Died: 2 Jan 1744, Irthlingborough, Northants. aged 68
Notes:
Gent of Irthlingborough (from St John Outlaw affadavit found with the pedigree in Northants CRO). Pedigree also says he was a testator of 1744 and dead by 1750.
For marriage the pedigree says "Married it is supposed in Luton in 1705. Not got Xide(?) Settlement" Later I found the marriage on the IGI. Gives YoB as ~1680, but I presume this is usual guess. However says he was of Dunstable, Bedford, which doesn't match with the Irthlingborough records below (although could easily have had property in both places).

FreeReg; A Wm Underwood chr in Irthlingborough 22 Mar 1677, father Robert.?
Big gap between 1st and 2nd child, presumably there were others ?
From British History Online; "C.P. 25(2)/937/4 Anne Hil.; /939/11 Anne Trin. For the Underwoods at Irthlingborough, c. 1724-68, see V.C.H. Northants. iii. 209; Bridges, Northants. ii. 236-7; Longden, Northants. and Rut. Clergy, xiv. 33. and The nature of this transaction was disputed, but the result was that during the 17th and early 18th centuries the manorial rights in Gumley belonged to local yeoman farming families. The precise descent of the manor is, therefore, obscure. William Aylworth (d. 1661) of Gumley devised the manor to his nephew William Underwood of Irthlingborough (Northants.). William's son, John Underwood, was living in Gumley in 1687, and was probably still alive in 1692-3. By 1706 John's son, William Underwood, had disposed of the manor to George Farmer and Henry Morley whose heirs in 1712 conveyed it to John Horton (d. 1742)." Presumably this later Wm Underwood is ours, but that doesn't match with the John I have as father not dying till ~1726.
COPY WILL OF JOHN HAWKES SON OF TIMOTHY AND AMY 1642-1717 ..... "Then I give and devise unto my loving wife Elizabeth Hawkes all those three parcels or pieces of meadow ground with the appurtenances belonging and being in Irthlingborough Northamptonshire which I purchased of Mr John Underwood and Mr William Underwood or one of them to hold for the term of her natural life "
History of Irthlingborough; "A manor in Irthlingborough ...... By Sir John it was sold before 1724 to John Underwood, attorney-atlaw, of Higham, who was succeeded by his son John, a minor at this date. John Underwood settled the manor on himself and his wife in 1738, and was dealing with it in 1768. It subsequently passed to the dean and chapter of Peterborough, who are the present owners."
A2A Warwicks "and several pieces of meadow in Marsh Meadow, Irthlingborough, purchased of John Underwood; all the premises, excepting the messuage were sold to Robert Lambe the elder of Great Addington. CR162/414 1682-1747"
William# married Sarah# Bush, daughter of Unknown and Unknown, on 10 Oct 1705 in Luton, Beds. (Sarah# Bush died in 1721 and was buried on 6 Oct 1721.)
