Burke's LG "of Scruton, M.P. for Northallerton, b in 1672, the well-known author of the "Registrum Honoris de Richmond", the first Vice-President of the Society of Antiquaries, and treasurer to the Royal Society. He m Henritetta, dau of Henry Raper Esq of Cowling Hall, co York, and by her, who d 29 Sep 1720, he left, at his decease, 25 June 1744, an only son and heir Roger Henry Gale."
