Dictionary of national biography has "His mother Jane was the only dau of Oliver Brunsell, vicar of Wroughton, in the same county (Burke's Landed Gentry). He served as a Lieut in Col Edward D'Oyley's regiment ..... "
Later Burke's has "Second son b 1638 accompanied the expedition under Penn and Venables which conquered Jamaica in 1655, as Lieut in Col D'Oyley's regiment, with whom he was connected, and was further appointed secretary to Cromwell's commissioners. He received large grants of land in that island where he became a Colonel of the horse, chief justice, speaker of the Assembly and one of the council. Had 3 sons. Amongst his descendents are; Charles Long (son) of Longville, Jamaica and Hurts Hall, Saxmundham, MP for Dunwich. Dudley Long, member of several parliaments, assumed the name North. Samuel Long of Carshalton, MP for Ilchester, Sheriff of Surrey Lt-Col Samuel Long JP, DL. William Long JP, DL. High Sheriff. Sir Charles Long GCB, PC. Peer as Baron Farnborough.
