  • Marriage (1): Nanny# Dixon on 20 May 1806 in Gayle, Hawes, N Yorks

bullet  Notes:

Dinsdale means danesdale, one of the early spellings, approx 12C, was Dynshalles. There are several others, all evolving into Dinsdale. The Yorkshire accent is very similar to some Danish pronunciation, words like butter, come, tub, and bath. This because the vikings occupied the North Yorkshire area especially around Wensleydale, Askrigg etc, and they eventually became assimilated into the population. And left as a reminder of their of where they came from the famous Yorkshire pronunciation of words with 'u' in them.

Looked in N Yorks CRO Hawes bapt index, between 1775 and 1795. Lots of possibles;
20 Jun 1775, John son of Alexander and Hannah Dinsdale, of Catriggs (which is near Burtersett).
14 Nov 1776, John son of Owen and Mary Dinsdale, of Hawes.
7 Oct 1781, John son of John and Agnes Dinsdale.
14 Apr 1782, John son of John and Mary Dinsdale, of Burtersett.
8 Mar 1785, John son of John and Isabella Dinsdale, of Burtersett.
3 May 1785, John son of William and Ann Dinsdale, of Snaizholm(e)
25 Nov 1785, John son of Jeffrey and Mary Dinsdale, of Gayle.
29 Sep 1789, John son of John and Elizabeth Dinsdale, of Gayle.
6 Jun 1790, John son of Alexander and Mary Dinsdale, of Burtersett.
The two Gayle ones presumably being the most likely, but who could say for sure, and it's not as though Gayle is a long way from Hawes !

Apr 1842; On John's wedding cert is listed as Labourer.
