Notes:
Got his parents from familysearch.org. There were 3 possibilites; Christening #1 24 Sep 1810, Hawes father John Dinsdale, mother Nanny. Christening #2 31 Dec 1811, Hawes, father John Dinsdale, mother Ann. Christening #3 3 Dec 1811, Askrigg, father Ralph. Rule out #3. #1 will be son of union of John Dinsdale, Gayle and Ann Metcalfe, Gayle, married 2 July 1810. #2 will be son of union of John Dinsdale, Hawes, and Nanny Dixon, Hawes, married 20 May 1807. I'm going to decide that it's #2, mainly because of a) the 'Nanny' bit and b) http://mygenerations.org/dinsdale/keiths%20notes.htm which seems to be our lot, although the part about John Dinsdale (b1843) going to Canada seems wrong.
N Yorks CRO; Found the 31 Dec 1811 birth record, but v v hard to read. However it definately said Ann for his mother, not Nanny. Didn't look for 24 Sep one. Tricky to say which is the correct one, but doubt it's #3, so either way his father is John and his mother is Ann or Nanny.
1841 Census; there are EIGHT John Dinsdales of roughly the correct age living in Aysgarth. If narrow age range down a bit (they seem to have been putting correct age instead of rounding - thankfully) then two possibles; 1.John 32, (presumably) married to Elizabeth, children called John and Alice 2.John 35, (presumably) married to Alice, daughter Agnes 5. Neither of these seem likely. Unless Margaret was his second wife. Or Elizabeth / Alice might actually be sisters. .... of course he might not even have been in Hawes/Aysgarth on census night. Or might be mis-indexed. Gawd.
Marriage cert he is John Dinsdale, of full age, Bachelor, Yeoman of Gayle, son of John Dinsdale, labourer. Witnesses are Richard Dinsdale and John Wade. Presum. John Wade is the John Wade who was a 45yo saddler in Hawes in the '41 census. There are 8 Richard Dinsdales in Yorks in 41, 5 of them in Aysgarth district.
N Yorks CRO; John baptism of 1843 he is listed as Yeoman, of Gayle. George Jnr baptism of 1844 he is listed as Yeoman, of Gayle. Nanny's baptism of 1848 he is listed as Labourer, of Gayle. George Snr baptism of 1850, listed as Labourer, of Gayle. Jeffrey baptism of 1852, listed as Labourer, of Gayle.
BUT on Nanny's birth cert. 1848 he is listed as woolcomber, so maybe above not the same person, although Childrens names and ages match the '51and '61 census.
1851 census (age 40) living in Hawes with his wife and children. Occupation; Wool comber. Place of birth shown as Aysgarth. There is a Matthew Dinsdale (47) living alone next door and next to him is a Owen Dinsdale (62) living with his family. Too many Dinsdales!!
1861 census (age 50) living at Gayle, Hawes with wife and children. Occupation Landowner and Labourer (I originally thought land something and labourer but http://www.geocities.com/beaulands/census/hawes_61.htm think landowner).
There are 18 John Dinsdale's died in Yorks 1866 +/- 5 yrs. However 9 of these have birth dates that are not anywhere near 1811 (and the rest don't have birth dates). Of the remainder he is presumably; John Dinsdale, Q4 1864, Askrigg. Vol 9d, Pg 333.
1871; Wife listed as widow. But note that there is a Jno Dinsdale (widower, aged 60) living in the house of a Mary Alton in Muker as a boarder. Born in Askrigg, occupation Hawker (of German Yeast?!?). Could be him, but I doubt it somehow.
John# married Margaret 'Peggy'# Dinsdale, daughter of George# Dinsdale and Barbara? Spencer?, on 20 Apr 1842 in The Parish Chapel, Chapelry of Hawes, Yorks. (Margaret 'Peggy'# Dinsdale was born in 1813 in Hawes, N Yorks, christened on 7 Dec 1813 in Hawes, N Yorks and died on 8 Dec 1885 in Gayle, Hawes, N Yorks.)
