From Wendy H; The Times Sep 17 1886, Middlesex Sessions; "William Thomas, aged 80, described as a schoolmaster and well educated, was indicted for having on the 3rd of April last stolen from the dwelling-house of Alfred George Bateman, surgeon, of 64 Longridge Road, Earls Court, SW, a morocco case containing surgical instruments. It appeared that the prisoner had called at Dr.Bateman's house and represented to Miss Bateman, a sister of the presecutor, that he was a friend of her married sister in India. On the strength of this and other representations Miss Bateman and her mother supplied him with refreshments and left him alone in the room for two or three minutes. Upon the return of Dr.Bateman in the evening he found that a case of surgical instruments had been taken from his room. The prisoner was arrested on the 31st of August, and upon being told of the charge said, "I deny it in toto". The jury found the prisoner guilty and five previous convictions were proved against him out of ten charges. His habit, according to the evidence of an officer from the office of the Society for the Repression of Mendicity, was to call at houses in the West-end and extract from the servants information respecting the residents, of which he afterwards availed himself to obtain pecuniary assistance. A paper found upon him showed that he was a progessional begging letter-writer. The convictions against him dated as far back as 1849. The learned Commissioner sentenced the prisoner to five years' penal servitude."
