bullet  Notes:

Sometimes gives PoB as Ivelet (tiny hamlet west of Gunnerside and a moor with lead mines) and sometimes as Melbecks (moor adjacent to Ivelet also with lead mines).

1851 Census; Living, aged 9 in Askrigg with parents, 2 siblings, grandmother and a lodger (John Pedley, 24, Miner). Occupation; Scholar. PoB here is Ivelet - same as siblings.

Leeds Times; Sat 15 Dec 1860; Bradford; On Monday, at the parish church, Mr Jacob Sunter to Miss Zipporah Chapman, both of Eccleshill.

1861 Census; (incorrect indexed as Sunten) living as head, aged 19, at Carperby cum Thoresby (same village as his parents) with wife. Occupation; Lead Miner.

1871 Census; Living as head, aged 29, at Wharton Street, Loundon, Co.Durham with wife and 2 children. Occupation; Deputy Overman. PoB here is 'Jobeth(?), Swaledale, Yorks'.

1881 Census; Living as head, aged 39, at Warren House,Askrigg with mother and 5 children. Is married but wife not there on census night (she is staying with his brother Thos). Occupation; Keeper of Warren. PoB here is Melbeck.

1882 Q3 - there is a Jacob Sunter marrying in Aysgarth district, name of wife not readily obvious - need to get cert., although presumably it was to the Susannah of '91.

Aysgarth Directory of Trades 1890; Sunter Jacob, keeper of rabbit warren
There is also an Elizabeth Sunter (of Thwaite Bridge) and a James (of Camshouse) and a John (of Collier Holme) - all farmers.

1891 Census; Living as head, aged 49, at Warren House, Askrigg with 2nd wife and 3 children. Occupation; Gamekeeper. PoB Ivelet.

Have picture of Warren House - there is no sign, but it is identified as such on the map, the actual warren is behind it on the same side of the road. The house is right up against the road, which also ties in with references to him as Toll keeper on the Richmond to Lancaster Turnpike (which is why Askrigg was an important coaching centre before the A684 on the opposite side of Wensleydale).

Precise death & burial details from John Rogers research.
