Presumably the author of Edward G. D. Liveing's Attack: An Infantry Subaltern's Impressions of July 1st, 1916 (Macmillan, 1918), reference the Battle of the Somme, excerpt of which is here; http://sourcebook.fsc.edu/history/attack.html
It is "An account of 1st July 1916 by a subaltern in the 12th (Rangers) Battalion, London Regiment, who was wounded on that day. His unit was in 56 (London) Division and their objective was Gommecourt, north of the main battle zone. "
The book is dedicated to "The NCO's and men of No.5 Platoon of a Battalion of the County of London Regiment, whom I had the good fortune to command in France during 1915-16, and in particular to the memory of Rfn.C.N.Dennison my Platoon Observer, who fell in action July 1st, 1916 in an attempt to save my life".
