bullet  Notes:

1841 Census (age 20), living at Guilford?, Grays Inn Lane, St Pancras. Occupation; Solicitor.

Rec'd £5000 from his father upon coming of age - about £33k in 2007 prices!
Also rec'd 2 tenements in Skitteroine (?!) Wellingborough plus a 1/6th share in the rest of the estate in his fathers will.

1846 Law Reports (from The Jurist) "The Lord Chancellor has appointed George Rands, of Northampton, Gent., to be a Master ....." .

1851 Census (age 30) living with widowed mother, brothers, sister, 2 nieces and 2 servants in Newland, Northampton St Sepulchre, Northampton. Unmarried. Occupation; Attourney & Solicitor.

From Wendy; Northampton Mercury 13 Nov 1851 "at Priors Marston George Rands to Julia Wright youngest dau of Wm Wright"

Shareholders of Northamptonshire Union Bank circa 1851 include;
Rands, George, Northampton, exors of
Rands, George jun, Northampton, Solicitor

May 1856; Is named in the will of Stephen Sumpter of Irthlingborough "Rands, George of Northampton, gentleman, friend". I assume it's him rather than his father, who was dead by then, also later mentions Julia as his wife, so definately him.

1861 Census (age 40) living in No. 10 Newland, Northampton St Sepulchre, Northants. Wife is his sisters husbands sister. Occupation; Attourney. There are 7 children, his sister (Elizabeth) and 4 domestic servants. Living next door to his mother.

1871 Census (age 50) Living with wife and children and 3 servants at No.41 Newland (?), Northampton St Sepulchre. Occupation; Solicitor.

There is a Julia Eleanor Rands born and died in Q1 1871 at Oundle. Possibly this is another child?

1881 Census (age 60) Living with wife and children and sister (Elizabeth Pain) and brother (Christopher) and 3 servants at No 41 Newland, Northampton St Sepulchre. Occupation; Solicitor and Registrar of the Northampton ?? (Book?) of Record.

1891 Census (age 70) Living with wife and children and a visitor (Lilian M Wade) at No 43 Newland, Northampton St Sepulchre. NB: Now living at No.43 and No.41 is 'Offices' occupied by 3 servants. Occupation; Solicitor.

Northamptonshire Notes and Queries: An Illustrated Quarterly Journal 1890 "On the plan of Northampton for the 1768 election, The Chequer Inn is shown as being at the ... the Parade, Newland (on the left hand as far as Mr. Rands', ..." It seems to definitely be Newland not Newlands. Presumably, given the date, this is George Rands junior's house, but I assume that is same as his father anyway.

1901 Census (age 80) Living as widower at 41 Newland, Northampton St Sepulchre. With 4 unmarried daughers and 3 servants (inc. a sick nurse). Occupation; Solicitor.

Northampton Mercury, 31 Jan 1902; Death of Mr.George Rands. "It is with deep regret that we record the decease this morning, at his residence, Newland, Northampton, of Mr George Rands, solicitor, and the registar of the Borough Court of Record. Mr.Rands' father, also named George Rands, was a public man of the town half a century ago, and for a number of years a member of the Improvement Commissioners of the borough. He was a leather seller in trade. His son George, who born in 1819, was articled to the law, and was admitted solicitor as long ago as 1842. In 1858 he was appointed registrar of the Borough Court of Record, a post he filled until his death. For some years he was a member of the Board of Commissioners, also of the Board of Guardians, on this later body representing the parish of St.Sepulchre. His eldest son joined him in the partnership of G and G.W.Rands, solicitors. Mr.Rands lost his wife in 1896. He leaves two sons, Mr.G.W.Rands, already mentioned, and Mr. W.H.Rands, Government Inspector of Mines, Queensland; and six daughters, five of whom are unmarried and live at home, and the other of whom is the wife of the Rev.H.G.D.Living (sic) of Winchester. A full memoir of the deceased will appear in tomorrow's 'Northampton Daily Reporter' ".

Northampton Mercury, 7 Feb 1902; Funeral of Mr.G. Rands of Northampton "The funeral of the late Mr George Rands, of Northampton, whose death was reported in last weeks Mercury tooks place at St.Sepulchre's Church, Northampton on Monday afternoon. The body was placed in a coffin of polish oak with brass fittings. The brass shield bore the inscription "George Rands, died 31st Jan 1902 aged 81 years". The mourners were ; Mr.G.W.Rands (son), Miss Rands, Mrs.Liveing, Miss E.Rands, Miss G.Rands, Miss U.Rands and Miss L.Rands (daughters), Mrs.G.W.Rands (daughter in law), Rev.H.G.Liveing, Hyde, Winchester (son in law), Mrs.W.G.Walford, South Hampstead (niece), Dr.W.H.Lamb, London (nephew), Mr.G.F.Lamb, Bedford and Mr.H.Packer, Northampton. Amongst the congregation were Rev T.C. Beasley, Coun James Barry J.P., Dr.Faulkner, Mr.C.C.Becke, Mr.G.H.Percival and Mrs.Percival, Mr.T.L.Shoosmith, etc…….. The procession was met at the lynch gate by ………. Rev.R.W.Wynter (Wellingborough), …… hymns, lessons, prayers ….. The body was interred IN THE FAMILY VAULT in the churchyard, due east of the chancel. In the same vault were buried the deceased's wife and the deceased's young son, and his father and mother lie in the next grave. Floral tributes were sent by Mr. and Mrs. G.Rands and their children, St.John, Oliver and Violet "in loving memory of dear grandad" ; the daughters "In loving memory from his daughters"; Rev.H.D. and Mrs.Liveing, Mrs.W.G.Walford, Mr. and Mrs. Lamb, the Misses Wright (nieces) ; 'Marjorie, Catherina, Edward and Frances Liveing (grandchildren); Mr.T.W. Holbrook, Shepherd's Bush (nephew); Mrs.Phipps, Collingtree, Counc J.Barry J.P. ; Col and Mrs.A.F. Taylor, Teignmouth; the Misses Palmer, Torquay ; Dr and Mrs Harding, Berry Wood ; Mr and Mrs James Walker, South Hampstead"
And I don't know why H.Packer is listed with the mourners, rather than the rest of the congregration. Presumably they holidayed in Devon ?

Have 1973 letter from solicitors 'Thomas J Eckford & Rands' (consultant G St John Rands) to Kate St John Wright (qv), regarding will of Miss Ada St John Wright. Obviously this is not him - presumably is his grandson George (son of George W.)

Google Books; was a subscriber to 'Sonnets of the Month' in 1863 !

Also a reference to him in the "Journal of The Northamptonshire Natural History Society and Field Club", again looks like list of subscribers.
