From http://www.lamartin.com/genealogy/kalshoven.htm; "The man with the handle-bar moustache is my Grandfather, Ernest Christian, (note the Anglicisation of the name). He was brought up an Englishman and went to Framlingham College, in the East of England. He tried the tea business and didn't like it and went off to join the British Army. He was quite a shorty, only about 5' 7". He was sent to India, where he became an N.C.O., before being posted to South Africa. After leaving the army, he joined the Z.A.R.P. (the Zuid Afrikaanische Republiek Polisie), the precursor to the present-day South African Police Services. Among some other duties, he was in charge of the control of some of the diamond-rushes, when the diamond fields were being opened up. After retiring, he left South Africa and went to live in Bulawayo, Rhodesia, where he took to farming on a small scale and raised his two sons. I inherited the name Christian and named my son Christiaan"
Ernest married Florence Cowell on 20 Mar 1914 in Pretoria, South Africa. (Florence Cowell was born in 1879 and died in 1958.)
