Mary Ann Grant

  • Born: Q1 1874, Pocklington, East Riding
  • Died: 26 Mar 1955 aged 81

bullet  Notes:

1881 census; 7 yo, living with father and sisters at 1 Union Terrace, Pocklington

1891 Census; age 17; at school in St.Margaret's Parish, Leicester. Is trainee governess I think.

1901 Census; was visitor at The Rowans, Bletchingley, Surrey (1901 census), home of her sister. Interestingly Robert Triffett (who was already married to Mary's sister Jessie) was also a guest at the same time.

1911 Census; Living as sister in law age 37 at Powisland, Union Street, Pocklington with brother is law Thomas Cliffe Grant and sister Edith. Occupation not given.

1921 Census ; Living (age 47y3m) at Powysland, Union Street, Pocklington with sister and brother in law. Occupation; None. Shown as single.

Have letters from Powell & Young, Solicitors, Pocklington. Stating;
a.She died 26th March 'last' (letter is April 1956, but presume this means she died 1955).
b.Believed she did make a will, but it can't be found.
c.If no will is found her estate will be divisible into three parts of which one part would be her sister Mrs.E.M.W.Grant "who lived with the deceased", one part would be equally divided between the 5 dau of her sister Jessie Ann, and the remaining part would devolve on the child or children of the deceased's sister Maud Powell "who we understand was your mother".
d.It is believed the elusive homemade will left everything to Mrs.E.M.W.Grant "whose means are extremely limited".
e.The 5 x dau of Jessie Ann are willing to relinquish their share ..... would you (Thomas G-P) be willing to do the same ?
f.Second letter May 1956 thanking Thomas for agreeing to relinquish his share.

Joint gravestone in Pocklington Cemetry for Thomas Cliffe Grant, Edith Mary Walford Grant and Mary Ann Grant. No dates on it. In same cemetry is gravestone of Thomas Grant and Mary Anne Grant. Have pictures of both. Again would imply not married if buried with sister and brother-in-law, and has her name as Grant.
