bullet  Notes:

On wedding cert second name is Ann, but is Anne on grave.

Trail to parents/mdn name; couldn't find in past census Couldn't find wedding record for sure. Got Alice Maude's birth cert. and said mothers maiden name was Dax (although hard to read). That led me to find the weddding, but still couldn't find Dax for sure on past census. So then sent for wedding cert, which led me to correct family group.

Marriage cert is; Mary Ann Dax, full age, spinster, Welshpool, father is William Dax, Grocer. Witnesses are Thomas WALFORD (see first daughters name, he is her aunts husband), Margaretta W.DAX (see second daughters name) and Henry ? DAX. This means it is definately the family found in Madeley, Shrops in the '61 English census.

1841:
The Mary Ann DAX returned on ancestry is NOT her - as this same person still living with her mother (Sophia Dax) in '71 when we know that our Mary Anne was living in Pocklington.
I believe she is; living age (5/6/8 - hard to read) at Berriew, Aberhafesp Berriew, Montgomeryshire. Is in a house thus;
Mary Withers 65, Independent means, born in Montgomeryshire - her gran
Ann Withers 30, Independent means, born in Montgomeryshire - her aunt
Mary Breeze 15, born in Montgomeryshire. There is a Breeze as Ag Lab with Thomas in '51.
M.A. Dax 8, born in Montgomeryshire - HER.
Thomas(?) Goodwin, 20, Shopkeeper.
William, Mary and Edward Dax are living next door.

1851;English Census; Age 15, is visitor at Oakley Cottage, Shrewsbury St Julian, Shrops, which is the house of Eliza Withers (her Aunt). Other Withers there as well. She's indexed as Mary Ann Robinson .... ah, that's the servants name, but definately says Dax, not ditto, and gives Welshpool as PoB.

1861 Welsh Census; Might be her; Living (Mary Ann Dase - might be DAX, but doesn't look like the Cox a few lines above, unmarried born Welshpool, Montg) age 24, as visitor at Rhydawse(?) Farm, Montgomery, Montgomeryshire, house of Evan Vaughan Lloyd (29, farmer of 130 acres). There is the Head of house, his sister (Sarah Vaughan Lloyd) and 2 other visitors; Cornelius Morgan (34, Bait Merchant) and David Griffiths (29, Bankers Clerk). Also 1 house servant and 5 farm/stable servants.

Q3 1864; Mary Ann DAX married Thomas Grant in Montgomery, Montgomeryshire. WHY did she get married in Welshpool, if parents had moved to Shrops ? Why is she NEVER with her parents on census? How did they meet ?? V.odd.
In 'Cambrian News'(paper); St Mary's Church, Welshpool by the Rev J.E. Hill, Mr.Thomas Grant of Pocklington to Miss Mary Anne Dax, Powis Castle Park, Welshpool.

Wrexham Advertiser; Sat 24 Sept 1864; On the 20th, at St. Mary's Church, Welshpool, by the Rev. J. E. Hill, Mr Thos. Grant, Pocklington, Yorkshire, to Miss Mary Anne Dax, Powis Castle Park, Welshpool
That sounds like she was living with her aunt and uncle (Thomas Walford) at the time she got married (he was agent at Powis Castle), rather than parents (who had already moved to Shrops). Which might explain why first born was 'Edith Mary Walford Grant' ; of course we knew where the Walford came from, but it sounds like she was even closer to them.

1871 Census; (age 33) living at 50 Union Street with husband and daughters and a servant.

By 1881 census Thomas was widower, Mary Anne (her youngest daughter and namesake) was born in 1874. Further research both died/born in Q1 1874, so presume she died either in or immediately after child birth, hence daughters name.

Also have pictures of Thomas and Mary Anne's gravestone (shown) in Pocklington Cemetry (close to main entrace, on the right, just by circular bit of path). In same graveyard is joint gravestone for Thomas Cliffe Grant, Edith Mary Walford Grant and Mary Anne Grant (daughter), but that has no dates on it.

Mary married Thomas# Grant J.P., son of Thomas# Grant and Mary# Smith, 20th Sep 1864 in Welshpool Parish Church, Montgomery, Montgomeryshire. (Thomas# Grant J.P. was born 9th April 1823 in Pocklington, East Riding, christened 11th April 1823 in Pocklington, East Riding, died 24th June 1907 in Pocklington, East Riding and was buried in 1907 in Pocklington, East Riding.)
