Arthur Powell
- Born: 1869, Clodock, Herefordshire
- Marriage: Mary Ann Creed on 30 Mar 1902 in Wolverhampton
Notes:
1871 Census; Age 2; Living at Llanveynoe, Herefordshire with parents and siblings.
1881 Census; Age 12. Visitor of Williams family at Great House Farm, Whitchurch, Llandaff, Cardiff Union, Glamorgan. Father and sister were also visitors. Brother James was working on this farm in 1881 and is listed as Farm Servant on the census.
1891 Census; A few possibles, but non obvious.
A 24yo Arthur Powell sailed for Canada from Liverpool in 1892?
1901 Cenus; (age 29); Boarder in house of Mary Thurston, 87 Owen Road, Wolverhampton. Is Builders Foreman. Ages don't quite match up, but gives place of birth as 'Lower Cwm, Longtown, Hereford' - ie. names his fathers farm - pretty specific. Mary Thurston was his future wife.
Marriage info from Jill Salisbury; Mary Ann Thurstans married Arthur Powell on 30th March 1902. Place of residence 87 Owen Road, Wolverhampton. Another name listed was a George Creed who was Mary Ann's father and listed as a Canal Inspector. Arthur Powell was listed as a Builders Foreman.
19th Aug 1903 his father dies in Norton, Wroxeter and he is the informant (on 21st Aug) on the death cert. as 'son in attendance' with address of 87 Owen Road, Wolverhampton - same as above.
There is an Arthur Powell who died Q2 1910 in Walsall, Staffs, b~1867 which could be him, however there is a 42yo Arthur Powell b ~1869 living in Wolverhampton in 1911 census, but that person born in Alderminster, Warwicks and has wife and 3 dau (eldest 17), is Commerical Traveller. Could be him if a) Alderminster is wrong (only seen transcript not original) and family were elsewhere in 1901, but seems more likely that the 1910 death is him ; BUT he was a witness at step-dau Lilian's wedding in 1913. so obviously not !
1913; Witness at wedding of step dau Lilian Thurston.
In the 1920's (here http://www.gbpeopleslibrary.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=9&Itemid=10&limitstart=2 ) there was builder Arthur Powell in Wolverhampton who built an awful lot of council houses. This could well be him, especially as Joan Balmer (nee Evans) believes he become 'someone important in Wolverhampton'.
Joan reports that Arthur used to visit his sister Sarah at Wrentall where they farmed after Norton Farm, and before they moved to Lea Hall, Lea Cross.
Could this be the 'Uncle Arthur' who went to Canada? When MTGP was young his father used to talk about someone (although perhaps as Uncle Sidney) who lived in Canada, perhaps this person was a relative of Gwen's although could have been Arthur. Certainly MTGP doesn't ever remember meeting an Uncle Arthur OR Sidney ! There are 2 x Canadian National Railway engines (rather large and heavy and not really 'toys') that TJGP was given, one of which he gave to MTGP (who later inherited the other one) when he was young. Originally MTGP thought this may have come from the mysterious Canadian Arthur/Sidney however they also say 'British Empire Exhibition London 1924' so could be nothing to do with Arthur, more likely James and Thomas went to the exhibition in 1924 and got the trains .
Arthur married Mary Ann Creed on 30 Mar 1902 in Wolverhampton.
