- Marriage (1): Lilian Gibson in Mar 1912
- Died: 21 Mar 1954, St Mary's Hospital, Southsea aged 78
Notes:
Quite possibly he is Charles CECIL Bateman as someone of that name born in Q4 1875 in Cookham - this later confirmed by Bateman research. Which also gave precise birthdate and occupation as 'Cape Government Land Surveyor, S.Africa'.
Bateman Research; Left Bedford Modern School to join the survey class at St Andrews College, Grahamstown, SA (also Anthony Bateman's college). Anthony also says ".....where my father's maternal uncle (Prof Ernest Schwartz) was a professor of Geology. My father never knew that the Bateman in the old group photos in our drill hall was his cousin. He was a land surveyor in Rhodesia at the turn of the century and became a white hunter. He died a bachelor, perhaps in the 1950s/60s. St Andrews lists him as a Lieut in WWI, with no regiment, corps or service. He is not listed in the British, SA or Rhodesian forces however. Neither the Royal Geographic Society nor either of his schools have more info on him than I have. "

From Wendy H; was elected Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society on Tuesday December 21 1910 and this was reported in the Times of the next day. and Times Feb 28 1912 : Another March wedding will be that of Mr C Cecil Bateman, elder son of Colonel Bateman, late 1st Battalion (31st) East Surrey Regiment and Miss Lilian Gibson, youngest daughter of Captain Gibson of Glen Druid, Shankhill Co.Dublin, and a niece of Lord Ashbourne. Whether this marriage actually happened remains to be seen - it's not in the Free BMD Index, but could have been in Ireland.
