Col. Henry William Bateman

  • Born: 22 Jan 1841, Islington, London
  • Marriage: Clara Johnson on 11 Dec 1874 in St Andrew's Church, Southport, Lancs
  • Died: 11 Nov 1912, Paddington, London aged 71

  Notes:

Precise birth, marriage and death dates from Bateman research. Also says retired from APCorp in 22 Jan 1901 and gives final rank as Lt.Col.

1841 census (age 4 months) living at Church Row, St. Mary Islington East, Middlesex (London) with parents and sister.

1845 he is apparently one of the founding governors of Emanuel College (founded by his father), although only 4yrs old ?

1851 Census; Is living as visitor, age 10, in Bridge St, Belper, Derbys, at house of Robert and Frances Midworth(?).

Bateman Research; The Royal Geographic Soc confirmed that he had donated a piece of the Great Wall which he visited after serving with Gen. Gordon in the 1856 war. A diary exists of his trip.

1861 Census; no obvious candidate.

1871 Census; Lancashire, Vessels, on board the ship Thebes (home port Liverpool), Henry W Bateman, 30, unmarried, Army, born St Mary's, London.

London Gazette 13 Feb 1874;
31st Foot, Lieutenant Henry William Bateman to be Captain, vice John Michael Bradley Wood, deceased. Dated 21st January 1874.

I presume marriage details are correct, Ormskirk not a million miles from Runcorn.... this is only place it says William for second name. But can't find Clara Johnson in 1871, although in 1861 she IS born in Runcorn and is living in Brighton as a boarder (at a v small school), so seems fairly conclusive that the marriage is correct.
Later from Anthony; Henry William Bateman married Clara Johnson (aged 27) St Andrew's Church, Southport, Lancs on 11 December 1874. He was then a Captain, living in Southport and she lived at Portland St, Southport - father, John Johnson, J.P.

London Gazette 23 July 1878, Army Pay Dept. The undermentioned Officers having resigned their Commissions as combatant Officers to be Paymasters, with the honorary rank of Captain in the Army, dated 1st April 1878, such antedate not to carry back pay;
Captain Henry William Bateman, from 31st Foot.

1881 Census; Presumably he is ; living, aged 41, as head, at Antony Parish, Cornwall with wife, 2 sons and 2 servants. Occupation is Captain on Pay xxxxx , Active List. The Charles Bateman shown as his son is later living with Henry's 1/2 sister Agnes Louisa and her husband Dr.Christopher St J Wright in 1901 census, which clinched it really. This shown his PoB as London.

London Gazette 29 May 1883, The undermentioned Paymasters and Honorary Captains, having completed 5 years service in the rank of Paymaster, to have the honorary rank of Major in the Army;
Henry William Bateman. Dated 1st April 1883

London Gazette 24 July 1883, The undermentioned Paymasters and Honorary Majors to be Staff Paymasters;
Henry William Bateman, vice W.Dring. Dated 1st April 1883

1891 Census; not with his family, cant find solo, presumably with Army abroad.

1901 Census; Living, aged 60 as head at 67 Shooters Hill Road, Greenwich, London (Wendy says this is Blackheath) with wife, dau and 2 servants. Occupation; Army Pay Dept, Retired. For first time this also gives; middle initial of 'W' and b) PoB as Islington (although eventually found him in '51 which also says Islington and initial of 'W').

From Anthony; Henry William Bateman (born 22 January 1841) died in Paddington on 11 November 1912. His son, H Bertram Bateman, was in attendance - address, Castellain Rd, W. His half-brother, Dr AG Bateman, certified the death. Clara Bateman (86) died 13 Sep 1931, 13 Balfour Rd, Walmer, Kent. CC
Bateman was the informant.

From Anthony B; There is still a Colonel Bateman Cup for rowing awarded at Bedford Modern School, when they all lived in Waldeck Avenue, near where I used to live in the 1980s. He was promoted several times in the several grades of Paymaster and each time granted the equivalent normal Army rank, finally reaching Colonel (info from Army Lists).

Henry married Clara Johnson, daughter of John Johnson J.P. and Eliza Susan, on 11 Dec 1874 in St Andrew's Church, Southport, Lancs. (Clara Johnson was born in 1848 in Runcorn, Cheshire.)
