Got second name from finding birth register - St Germans district of Cornwall. This showns as Bartram, however Bateman research shows as 'Bertram', which seems more likely, so changed it to that. This also gave precise DoB and occupation and education as 'Royal School of Mines, Royal Field Artillery & West African Frontier Force, Nigerian Regiment' and "served in WWI in the RWAFF and then in the RE Tunnelling Companies"
1881 Census; Living, aged 2, at Antony Parish, Cornwall with parents, brother and 2 servants.
1891 Census; Living, aged 12, at 61 Waldeck(?) Ave, Bedford and Kempston, Beds with mother, 2 siblings and servant. This gives middle initial (not shown in '81) - which might be B.
1901 Census; can't find as born in Cornwall. There is a Henry B Bateman, 22, married with son, book binder, living in Kensington but a) born in Marylebone and b) has brother Robert staying with him.
1911 Census (from Wendy); living (age 32) as visitor and nephew at the home of Bertha Johnson (60 presum. his mother's sister) born Runcorn at Nautilus Shoreham Beach Sussex (Bungalow). Occupation; Mining Engineer.

Bertram Bateman, younger son of the late Colonel Bateman, 31st (East surrey) Regiment A.P.D. and of Mrs Bateman 36 Ashworth Mansions London and Joan Oxley, daughter of Mr Fred C Hill, of Square House, Lathom, Lancs. Wedding cert; Henry Bateman/Joan Oxley Hill St Savours Paddington 20/08/19. Oxley was her middle name - we thought perhaps this was a married name but she was spinster of full age. Witnessed by Clara Bateman (his mother) and Frederick Hill (her father).
1921 Census; living as head (aged 42y,8m) at Manor House, Marston, Oxford with wife and servant. Occupation; Mining Engineer on own account at no fixed place. Occupying 8 rooms.
From Wendy H; Times; Mrs Susan Nicholls only daughter of the late Mr H Bertram Bateman and Mrs Bateman of Cherry Acre Tonbridge married a Dr P T Cooper in 1947.
Google books; His obit is in 'The Mining Magazine' (not sure year) which starts "HENRY BERTRAM BATEMAN, who met his death accidentally on October 7, graduated from the Royal School of Mines in 1899 and was successively- engaged in India....."
Wendy found; Henry Bertram Bateman died October 7 1935 Sevenoaks. Found announcement in paper but no mention of circumstances although we know it was an accident.
Henry married Joan Oxley Hill, daughter of Fred C. Hill and Unknown, on 20 Aug 1919 in St Savours, Paddington. (Joan Oxley Hill was born on 7 Sep 1891 in Ormskirk, Lancs and died Q4 1971 in Lancaster, Lancashire.)
