Mary# Gwillim
- Born: 1772
- Marriage (1): James# Powell on 14 Apr 1796 in Ewyas Harold, Herefordshire
- Died: 15 Nov 1842 aged 70
- Buried: 1842, Ewyas Harold Parish Church, Herefordshire
Notes:
From EH PR's on Hereford CRO; Mary Powell of Dog (farm presumably) buried in EH aged 70 on 19th Nov 1842. James Powell of Kingstone buried in EH aged 72 on 12th(?) Sep 1844 James Powell of EH buried in EH aged 82 on 21st May 1852. There are matching MI's in EH thus; POWELL JAMES 1852 081 Ewias Harold EWY/A137 = 1771 POWELL MARY (Mrs) 1842 070 Ewias Harold EWY/A137 = 1772
Tried to find her bapt in EH, but couldn't. However there is a gap in the records between 1772 and 1776. However there are; Bapt 7th Feb 1770 Clodock; Mary Gwilliam, dau of David Gwilliam and Mary Davies. Bapt 25 Oct 1772 Newton; Mary Williams, dau of John Williams and Ann. Bapt 30 Jan 1774 Clodock; Mary Williams, dau of Samuel Williams and Hanna. Bapt 8 Apr 1776 Clodock; Mary Gwilliam, dau of Samuel Gwilliam and Elinor. If look for possible sister Ann (b~1770) Bapt 11 May 1774; Newton; Ann Williams, dau of John Williams and Ann, but says buried in May 1790. Bapt 22 Oct 1775; EWYAS HAROLD; Ann Williams, dau of John Williams and Hannah. But presumably Ann would be bapt before Mary, and don't even know where born anyway, although presumably was close by.
There are quite a few Gwillims of 'The Hunt House' in Clodock graveyard (saw it in a book in Hereford CRO!) - however this person is 'Gent' which seems a bit grand for these !
Originally not proven that she was George's mother, but needed somewhere to put notes, in case she was. But George's mother is named in his will as Mary, which states that her will was dated 1842, so presumably she died around then. Certainly she must have been alive in 1841....
1841 Census; Living (age 50) at Ewyas Harold, Herefordshire with husband James and a George Powell (16) who is listed as 'Ag Lab' but is possibly her illeg. grandson, there is also a house servant. The farm servant is Elizabeth Watkins (12) - note that James Powell (b1797) married an Elizabeth Watkins, but was previously living with the same family and described as relatives. However that person is 10 years older than this person.
Mary Powell BR/1845/17 1845 These documents are held at National Library of Wales </archon/searches/locresult_details.asp?LR=210> Contents: Will. Miscellaneous. Diocese: Brecon Parish: Ewyas Harold Township: The Dog County: Hereford
To further complicate matters Geoff Gwatkin reports that James Powell (Senior or Junior??) is listed as the owner of Platch Farm in 1845. Further a James Powell also has property in the 3 parishes on the map that adjoin Dulas, namely; Rowlstone, Llancillo and Walterstone. And a George Powell (and a John Powell, Jr) are listed in EH in 1844. All I can think therefore is that; James Snr owned Platch, left it to his wife, who in turn left it to George (with conditions), but that the multiple changes in ownership had not been registered by 1845. ? This MIGHT imply that James died fairly close to 1845, in which case he could well be the James listed above ........BUT that person STILL alive in '51 !
Found her burial at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ukhfhs/mipi.html - age 70 = match.
