- Marriage (2): Ann
- Died: 28 Mar 1840 aged 74
- Buried: 6 Apr 1840, Pattishall, Northants
Notes:
Parents info from Colin Chapman. This supported by notes on back of Priors Marston picture saying "John Pirkins Wright was born 21st March 1820 at Pattishall Manor” which is factually correct, but it wasn't the Manor Ho actually in Pattishall, but the one in Eastcote, owned by his grandfather.
Marriage perhaps; John PERKINS of Pattishall Sarah LAWTON otp, widow 1796 15-Feb Bugbrooke. From Northampton CRO this reads; John Pirkins (could be e), Widower of the parish of Pattishall in this county and Sarah Lawton of this parish, widow were married in this church by licence this 15th day of Feb 1796. Signed not mark of. Witnesses were large squiggle ending in d, then Cassandrea (I originally deciphered as Paporrdra!) Pirkins and squiggle (poss Mary) Collins.
His death cert may help a little.
Appears as freeholder and Gent in Pattishall in "Copies of the polls taken at the several elections for members to represent the county of Northampton in parliament in the years 1702, 1705, 1730, 1745 [really 1748] & 1806." As PERKINS.
Northampton Mercury; 6 Jun 1801; One Hundred and Fifty Pounds Reward; (translate to modern English!) "Whereas some evil disposed person or person did, about two o'clock in the morning of Tuesday the 21st wilfully and malicously set fire to the hovels and out buildings belonging to Mr John Pirkins of Pattishall in the County of Northampton; whereby about 16 bay of building, a large quantity of hay, several dozen of hurdles, and some implements of husbandry, were wholly consumed. Whoever will discover the offender or offenders so that he or they may be brought to justice, shall, on his or her conviction, receive a reward of FIFTY POUNDS off the said Mr Pirkins ; and the Governor and Company of the Royal Exchange Assurance do hereby offer a further reward of ONE HUNDRED POUNDS. And if more than one was concerned, and either of them will impeach his Accomplice or Accomplices, so as to lead to conviction, he shall be entitled to the same Reward and Interest(?) will be made to procure his Majesty's Pardon. John Pirkins, Pattishall, May 22 1801". There is then a note saying they may "suffer death without benefit of Clergy" !
Northampton Mercury; Sat 13 March 1824; Marriages; On Thursday last, Mr. John Pirkins, of Pattishall, in this county, to Mrs.Clarke, of Dagenham Essex. SMGP: Is this the Ann we already knew about, or is this a THIRD wife ?!?!
FHO burials; Name John PIRKINS Date 6 Apr 1840 Aged 74 Place Pattishall Description Holy Cross Denomination Anglican County code NTH Incidentally another burial; Name John Collis PIRKINS Date 28 May 1843 Aged 65 Place Pattishall Description Holy Cross Denomination Anglican County code NTH. Could this actually be John COLLINS Pirkins ? (see speculation under Sarah).
His last will and testament, proved 18 Jul 1840 says; "John Pirkins of Pattishall in the County of Northampton Gentleman as follows I Give and Devise All that my Messuage Tenenment or Dwellinghouse with the Garden Orchard and appourtenances thereto situate and being at Pattishall afroresaid late in the occupation of Mr Hale but now undertenanted And also all those my cottages or tenements with the gardens and appurtenances thereto belonging also situate and being in Pattishall aforesaid which I sometime since purchased of Mr Barber of Tottenham And all other My Real Estate wheresoever situate and their and every of their appurenances Unto Wm Archbold of Fosters Booth in the Parish of Pattishall aforesaid Farmer and Wm Harris of Handslope in the County of Buckingham Farmer their heirs and executors administrators ...... to be recieived by my Dear Wife Ann Pirkins during her life for her sole use and benefit And from and after the decease of my said wife I declare that my Trustees shall stand seized and possessed of the said hereditaments and premises Upon trust to convey and assure the same unto or between such one or more of my three Granddaughters Sarah Ann, Mary Elizabeth, and Juliana (the children of my late daughter Sarah the wife of Mr William Wright) as shall be living at the Decease of my said wife and who shall live to attain the Age of 21 years and the Issue of such of them as shall die under that Age (but such Issue to the the share only which his her or their Parent would have taken if living) ....... Executors also get £5 each. Will assessed as less than £600 on 18 Jul 1840.
Odd that John Pirkins Wright not mentioned, perhaps he'd already had his cut, either from his father OR his grandfather. This is backed up by JPW leaving land in Pattishall in HIS will, although I suppose he could have bought it from his sisters.
*********************** MISC MEANDERINGS ON OTHER PI(e)RKINS IN THE AREA (written pre Chapman confirmation that Thomas was the father).
Notes on the back of the Priors Marston picture says John Pirkins Wright was born at 'Pattishall Manor'. I originally ruled this out. However..... "History, gazetteer, and directory of Northamptonshire; comprising a general survey of the county" 1849; Pattishall; ".... purchased both manors for £6,300, in 1759, by deed and will, he settled them on his son-in-law, Richard Dickinson Esq., and his eldest son, John Baron Dickinson, Esq. sold them in 1791 to Thomas PERKINS Esq. This gentleman sold them to Peter Denys, Esq., who soon after conveyed them to his brother in law, George, 3rd Earl of Pomfret, they are now in the possession on the 5th Earl." This Thomas *could* be John's father, doesn't say when Perkins sold the manors to Denys, but hopefully after 1820 when JPW was born. 3rd Earl died 1830. No Perkins in Pattishall in 1849, but we know our chap died in 1840, and no sons. Also from http://pattishallparish.org.uk/content/Trail.pdf we have "The Manor House is situated in a commanding, high, easily defendable position on a limestone plateau and was probably one of the first settlement sites in the village. Its history is linked with the Markes family - they bought both Manors - in the 17th and 18th centuries, and with the family of George Osborn from 1838 -1899.

Went to Pattishall (again!) Mar 07, couldn't find his grave. Did find ; 1.Grave of Thomas Pirkins Flack, however his mother was nee Perkins, so presume named after her. Also family new to area of Pattishall, orig from Essex and somewhere else, can't remember. Having said that his mother was JULIANA Perkins - JULIANA being the name of our John Pirkin's granddaughter.....? 2.Grave of a Mary, wife of a John Pirkins. 3.The 2 above v close together along with 2 graves either side of (2) one of which appears, perhaps, to say 'Pirkins' but they are almost completely unreadable. However they could be John Collis Pirkins.
There are lots of other Pirkins chr shown at; http://www.northants-familytree.net/pattishall%20christenings%201813-1884.htm .... presumably related in some way. Seems to be;
William and Sarah of Darlscote, Farmer; Joseph 1814 Esau 1814, married an Ann, described as labourer at chr of his child; Sarah Ann 1838 George 1819 Mary 1822 Elizabeth 1824
John and Ann of Darlscote, Carpenter; Hannah 1814 Amelia 1817 Julia 1820 There is also; Thomas Pirkins FLACK s Thomas & Ellen Eastcote Farmer 22-Feb 1824 Benjamin Pirkins KIRTON s George & Maria Eastcote Labourer 9-Oct 1836
In 1837 Pew #3 of St Lawrence's Towcester was owned by Josiah Simco (executor of the late Thomas Perkins) said pew was occupied by .... Richard and Thomas PHIPPS ! Mind you there are a lot of Perkins on that list, inc another Thomas. Lots of Samuel's, and of course we have Samuel Pirkins Wright.
On the IGI there are the following John Perkins possible births in Northants; A.Chr 7 May 1762 at Benefield, parents Richard and Ann. B.Chr 25 Dec 1764 Yelvertoft, parents Bartholomew and Eliz. C.Chr 24 Sep 1764 Rothwell, parents Joseph and Ann D.Birth about 1764, Rothwell, parents Samuel and Ann (perhaps same as C?) Of these Yelvertoft is the closest to Pattishall, but hardly conclusive.
There is an Elizabeth Pirkins of Pattishall ('Darleycote' sic) and Blisworth who's will was proved in the Archdeaconry Court of Northampton, will dated 23 Apr 1845 and proved 2 May 1857. This is at; http://www.northants-familytree.net/northants%20wills%201853-1857.html however this is presmably the Elizabeth Pirkins born in 1824 (see above).
There was a Sarah A Pirkins at Pattishall House (Dalscote hamlet) in 1851, obviously this is not her, but could be named in memory of, especially as our Sarah A died young.
There are some sites referencing Pirkins in Dalscote/Darlescote who are, it would appear, relatively well-to-do; http://www.grafton-regis.co.uk/docs/GraftonEstateCatalogueG601-G800.html http://www.northants-familytree.net/northants%20wills%201854-1857.html
However the 1841 Perkins; http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,54376.0.html are Ag.Labourers, so bit of mixed message there. In 1851 the same William Pirkins is described as 'Pauper, formerly agricultural lab'.
Further Pirkins/Pattishall references here; http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~coleen/pattishall.html
Two sites mention Dalscote/Darlescote - Dalscote is about 1 mile to East of Pattishall. Have pictures of house at Dalscote (it is now a small village, but only 1 house and a couple of cottages are more than 50 years old).
a2a Lincs Record Office; Creator(s): Hawley family of Tumby, Lincolnshire. No restrictions on access. Title Deeds. Northamptonshire. - ref. 2 HAWLEY/1/E FILE - Lease and Release. - ref. 2 HAWLEY/1/E/12,13 - date: 19, 20 July 1797. Nathaniel Harris, of Eascote, in Pattishall par., Northts., yeoman, Thos. Hart of Pattishall, miller (trustee for Harris), and Thos. Pirkins, of Eastcote, gent.
Can't find birth (as Pirkin or Pirkins) on IGI. Too many choices if Perkins. Lots of Pirkins (all with I but maybe that's just how the clerk spelt it) in the Pattishall records.
Doug C found following in CRO; John, son of Richard and Mary Pirkins bap 22 Sep 1777 Elizabeth, dau of Richard and Mary Pirkins, bap 18 Sep 1775 I also found on IGI; John Perkins, chr 26 Nov 1758, Welton, father; Edward, mother; Anna.
However our John was born ~1766 (due to age on burial record). I think the John above is John Collis Pirkins, who died 1843 (see below). Also I think I've found the burial of a Richard on FHO; Name Richard PIRKINS Date 9 Sep 1832 Aged 82 Place Pattishall Description Holy Cross Denomination Anglican County code NTH This Pirkins would only be 16 when our John Pirkins was born (but 27 when the other one born).
There is also in Administration and inventories of the Archdeaconry of Northampton: part II, 1711-1800 Pirkins, Mary, Pattishall to John, Gent, husband, 1794/23 Aug. Which could be his parents.
John# married Sarah# on 15 Feb 1796 in Bugbrooke, Northants. (Sarah# died in 1803 in Pattishall, Northants and was buried on 10 Apr 1803 in Pattishall, Northants.)
John# next married Ann. (Ann was born ~1776 in Northamptonshire.)
