Thomas Bateman
- Born: 13 Jan 1805
- Christened: 26 Nov 1806, Burton On Trent
- Died: 28 Sep 1874, Ovalau, Fiji aged 69
Notes:
From Anne G-P research.
Found bapt entry in St Modwen, BuT Parish Register;"27th Nov 1801, Thomas son of Thomas and Jane Bateman, note; this child was born 13th Jan 1805". Bapt on same day as Henry, presumably he was ill when younger, hence delay in bapt??
1851 Census; only vague possible is Thomas Bateman, 46, born and living in Burslem, Derbys. Lodger. Occupation given but unreadable. seems unlikely.
1861 Census; only vague possible is Thomas Bateman, 55, unmarried, born and living in Winster, Derbys. Occupation; Butcher.
But according to Henry Bateman biog "Thomas became a sailor and afterwards harbour and portmaster in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand. He died at his plantation Ovalau, Fiji, September 28th 1874", so presumably the above two are NOT him.
Also says that one of Henry's brothers earlier had a commission in the Burton Volunteers and that his brother Henry "still possessed the sword worn by him", this could be William or Thomas. However this was the FATHER Thomas, not the son.
Bateman research says "Died at his plantation in Fiji. Captain and Shipowner. Post & Harbour Master of Bay of Islands, NZ".

Quite possibly he is the Thomas Bateman who's logbook and letters are in Auckland Public Library, NZ (Google Books).
