1921 Cenus living (age 6y7m) at Bowskills Yard, Settle with parents and 2 siblings. Occupying 3 rooms.

Looked on Commonwealth War Graves Commission website www.cwgc.org. Only match is John T Moorby, Private. Sevice No; 3711094, Date of Death; 11/07/1944, age; 29, Lincolnshire (?!?) Regiment. Grave/Memorial Ref; 2.C.14. Cemetery; Hermanville War Cemetery - confirmed this is him - he was in 2nd Bn Lincolnshire Regm. And "Son of John Thomas Moorby and Jane Ann Moorby, of Settle, Yorkshire."

Hermanville beach was the eastern flank of the disembarkation of the British army in June 1944.

Jean thinks, perhaps, his troop carrier was sunk, but she's not sure.

Craven Herald 28th July 1944; "Settle Man Killed" Mr and Mrs T Moorby of Market Place, Settle have received official notification that their eldest son Pte John Moorby has died from wounds received on active service. Aged 29, Pte Moorby was formerly employed at Langcliffe Mills and left there in May 1935 to join the Army. Seven on his nine years service have been spent abroad in India and the Middle East, and he was wounded whilst abroad. When stationed at Aldershot he was amongst those chosen for the Guard of Honour attending King George V's funeral at Windsor. Returning from the Middle East, Pte Moorby spent his last leave at home in March. His father, an ex-serviceman of the last war, has two other sons both serving - Eric with paratroops abroad, and William under the Bevin Mines scheme."
