1861 Census (age 6) living in Northampton St Sepulchre, Northants with parents, 6 siblings, aunt (Elizabeth) and 4 domestic servants. Occupation; Scholar.

1871 Census; (age 16) is pupil at St.Paul's College, St Mary Magdalene Parish, Stony Stratford, Bucks. This public school closed in 1986. Details here;

1881 Census; (age 26) visitor at 27 Adam St East, Marylebone, London (house of Fanny Foxhall, Lodging House Keeper). But IS down as Visitor not Lodger. Occupation is "Assoc. Royal School Mines" then says something else, possibly engineer, which would make sense. Is unmarried.

1891 English Census; a few listed, but non born in Northants. Have looked at them all, but non seem likely candidates. Also looked Welsh and CI.

1901 English, Welsh & CI Census; Can't find him.

Can't find any death record 1881 - 1956. Abroad?

From Wendy H; Times of July 10 1914. RANDS - on 8th instant at Brisbane Queensland William Henry Rands A.R.S.M., F.G.S, Consulting Geologist to the Government, second son of the late George Rands of Northampton, aged 59.

History and role of government Geological Surveys in Australia By Robert K. Johns says "He was succeeded by William Henry Rands, who continued on the lines laid down by Jack and issued a further 32 reports before he was retrenched in 1902."

Numerous other mentions of him is Australia inc;
"Other noted geologists worked for the Geological Survey of Queensland after Alpin and Daintree. Among these were Augustus C. Gregory, Robert Logan Jack and William Henry Rands."

He wrote "Cape River gold field, Queensland. Geological survey" and "Coal in the parish of Noosa, Queensland." etc. etc. etc.

Proceedings of the Royal Soc of Queensland 1956 says "William Henry Rands was the son of a doctor who bore the same name. He was born in Northampton, England, on 8th February, 1861*. He graduated at the Royal ...." this doesn't match our info !
