Northampton Mercury; Sat 11th Feb 1888. Death of an Infirmary Doctor. Large numbers of people may hear with great regret of the death of Mr St John Outlaw Rands, assistant house surgeon at the infirmary. Mr Rands has been somewhat unwell for about two months past, but nothing dangerous was anticipated until January 16th when his illness assumed a serious aspect, and shortly before 11 o'clock on Tuesday night he succumbed to a high fever. Mr Rands who was a son of Mr Rands, solicitor, Newland, was at Guy's Hospital, and from there he went to act as assistant to Dr.Ellison of Ipswich, where he became very popular. A year last June, after he had been in the Suffolk town for two years, he obtained the appointment of assistant house-surgeon at the Infirmary in place of Mr Audland, who became house surgeon in succession to Mr Oswald Lane. The funeral is fixed for Saturday. His remains will be interred in the family vault in St Sepulchre's churchyard, and the cortege will start from the deceased's father's residence in Newland at three o'clock.
