bullet  Notes:

Found probable bapt on IGI, but doesn't give mother's maiden name.

1841 English Cenus (age 3), living at Stormy Grotte(?), Newton, Herefordshire with parents, 2 siblings and 2 x Ag Lab's.

1851 Census (age 13) living at Great Blackhill, Craswall, Herefordshire. Living with parents, 2 siblings and farm servant. PoB v hard to read but according to ancestry index it is Newton, Herefordshire. Occupation; Scholar.

1861 Census; Age 23; Living at 'Cwm Dulais' with parents and domestic servant. The Powell's (inc. his sister Mary Ann) also living at same address. There appears to be a line between the two groups (and 2 'Heads'). Perhaps cottage attached to farm or similar? NB: On this census James gives PoB as Clodock.

Marriage date from Dale Barnhart.

1871 Census; Age 33, living at Maerdy(?), Longtown, Herefordshire with wife, 2 children, father in law, sister in law, 1 domestic servant and 1 farm servant. Occupation; Farmer of 180 acres. PoB here given as Michaelchurch - about 4 miles from Clodock. Wasn't sure right person - but wife and children and in-laws match with '81 census info.

1881 Census; Age 43. Living at Great House Farm, Whitchurch, Llandaff, Cardiff Union, Glamorgan with wife, 2 daughters, 1 son, boarder (James Farr - his father-in-law) a visitor (George Powell - his brother in law), a servant (James Powell - his nephew, George's son) and 2 more visitors - namely George Powell's other 2 children Sarah Ann and Arthur. Occupation; Farm Bailiff of 95 acres.

Info from Dale Barnhart; The family immigrated to America in 1884 and settled in Iola, Kansas.
and James and Elizabeth lived on a farm East of Iola near LaHarp.

1891 Census; Can't find - England or Wales.

1901 Census; Cant' find - English or Welsh.

More on Great House Farm (inc picture) here;
http://www.whitchurchandllandaff.co.uk/The%20Farms%20of%20Whitchurch.htm but it is now largely built over, edge of Cardiff.

James married Elizabeth Esther Farr, daughter of James Farr and Unknown, in 1865. (Elizabeth Esther Farr was born in 1845 in Clodock, Herefordshire.)
