Notes:
Everything 'above' here from ; http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/owt/pedigree.aspx?pid=162239604&st=2 and not verified. Also get precise death date from here, although already had Q3 1848. Also got PoB from here.
IGI ; A Wm Hodell married Anne Phillipps 14 Nov 1806 at Clodock, presumably this is them, but odd 5 year gap till first child - unless others don't know about (but why they not in will?), which certainly not impossible. 1841 Census (indexed as 'Hoddel'); Living as head, aged 55, at Gridal (Farm), Clodock, Herefordshire with wife and 8 (presumably) children. There is also an Ann Brewer, 30 who has a child Ann (3) - this is presum the dau Ann Beavan mentioned in his will. The 'children' are in descending age order, apart from Eliza who is at the top of the list - which is slightly odd, but did have dau called Eliza AND Elizabeth (as mentioned in the will). So basically all the children apart from Mary (who is already married to Richard) are 'at home'. Note that all children 'Y'es to born in county, apart from James (and we already know Mary born in Brecon.). James and Mary adjacent in YoB. But eldest dau. Ann IS born in county, so presumably left and then came back. Also later on we discover that most of the Hereford children actually born in Much Dewchurch, not Clodock. Occupation; Farmer.
Found his burial on Herefordshire MI's index at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ukhfhs/mihi.html, age 66 so revised YoB from 1841 census derived age.
His will; Welsh Probate Records, Archdeaconry of Brecon. FILE - William Hoddell, Farmer - ref. BR/1849/11 - date: 1849 Contents; Will. Miscellaneous. Diocese: Brecon Parish: Clodock Township: Longtown, Gridol County: Hereford
Wife is widow by '51.
Alternative spelling of 'Gridall' could be 'Grydal' (see Longtown Hist Soc) or even Grindall ('61 census of wife). Actually I think it might be the Greidol Farm on the map, as this is near Trelandon, which is similar to name of Prosser farm, and the two close together on census - west of Rowlestone, east of Clodock.
His will; (from Longtown Historical Soc); Probate collection; will and documents for William Hoddell, farmer, of Gridall farm (Longtown) 1. Will dated 26 July 1848 : Beneficiaries: To eldest sons, James and Thomas, the management of Gridall farm. All the testator's stock, crops, implements and furniture to be valued and used to raise cash for legacies for: Wife Ann interest on £200 for life To sons Joseph, William, John & George £100 each less any advances already received. To daughters Ann, wife of Thomas Beavan, MARY, WIFE OF RICHARD WILLIAMS, Elizabeth and Eliza, £100 each less any advances already received. Date will proved unclear, but probably 4 May 1849.
Possibly his mother's will (same source); Probate Collection; The Will and documents of Sarah Yeomans, of Pond Gworlod, widow. Rowelstone, 1832; 1. Will dated 19 December 1829: Beneficiaries: To Herbert Yeomans, £10. To Sarah, wife of Joseph Prosser,£10. ‘All my money either on bonds note or all other…’ to executor that he split it 4 ways between sons, James Hoddell, Thomas Hoddell, WILLIAM HODDELL and Joseph Hoddell. James, Thomas and William to be paid their shares within a year of her death, but Joseph’s portion to be invested for him in land or government securities and the interest paid to him quarterly for the rest of his life. If he dies having married and had children then the interest to be divided amongst the children till they reach 21 when they can have the capital or if he dies unmarried then his portion to be divided amongst his 3 brothers To James Hoddell ‘all my household goods’ Executor: James Hoddell, son. Signed by testator. Witnesses: John Beavan & John Gwillim, Wayne. Date of Probate: 3 October1832. 2. Inventory: none but registration instruction states, ‘Effects sworn under one thousand five hundred pounds’ Observations: This will would seem to indicate not only that Sarah Yeomans was married twice but that one of her children by her first husband, Joseph, was ‘simple’ having to have his portion invested for him and interest doled out quarterly to him throughout his life. She seems too to have been a wealthy woman. The coversheet is endorsed with what seems to be a bill of £30 from the lawyers for arranging probate. The documents include the will, a separate registration instruction, coversheet and a sheet with James Hoddell’s address and instruction for collection at The Red Lion, Abergavenny; 4 sheets in all
