From Wendy H;Times 14 Jan 1955; Latest Wills. Mr.Aubrey Bateman of Branscombe near Seaton, Deon, six times Mayor of Bath, left £83,063 (duty paid £37,002). After legacies and bequests he left the remainder of his property to the Master and Fellows of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, for the entire reconstruction of the interior of the chapel in an Anglican manner "with meticulous attention to a beautiful altar and sanctuary" stating the reason for his bequest was "that it was as a member of this college I met my wife to whom all my happiness in life is due".

Bateman was born in 1875 and came to Bath in 1923, having previously been a member of Devon County Council. He was elected to Bath City Council in 1925. In 1930, he launched an appeal to provide the City of Bath and the surrounding area with a new hospital. Unremitting effort and personal example secured the widest possible cooperation and the appeal was a complete success. The Bath Royal United Hospital, standing in large open grounds on the outskirts of Bath and providing pristine medical and surgical facilities, was erected at a cost of £155,000.
