1851 Census (age 14) living as boarder at Cromwell House School, High St., Hornsey, Middlesex. Shows as born in Middlesex. Brother Arthur in same school, so fairly sure it's him.

1861 Census (24) living at 29 Hamilton Ter (?), St.John's Parish, St Marylebone, Middlesex with parents, brother, sister, 2 nieces (Birds) and 6 servants. Occupation; Baltic Merchant (same as father and brother).

His marriage and children not in Anne G-P research.

Times; July 3 1866 at St Mark's Hamilton Terrace Horatio Bateman, 4 Buckingham Terrace, Notting Hill and 55 Old Broad St, 3rd son of William Bateman of Hamilton Terrace to Rose Alicia Maria 2 surviving daughter of William R Ellis Bengal Army and 23 Carlton Villas, Maida Vale

Wedding cert; Horatio Bateman/Rose Alicia Maria Ellis. Marylebone parish churh 03/07/1866. She is 20 and her address 23 Carlton Villas. His Hamilton Terrace. Her father William Robert Ellis - Barrister. Usual Bateman witnessess.

1871 Census (age 34) living at Hadley House, Hadley, Middx with wife, son, 2 daughters, sister-in-law (Emily Ellis, 15) and 4 servants. Got maiden name from unmarried sister-in-law. (also later found marriage on ancestry). Occupation; 'Merchant (General)'

1881 Census (age 44) living at Hadley Green, Monken Hadley, Middlesex with wife, 11 children and 5 servants. Occupation; Wool(?) and Timber Merchant.

London Gazette, 6 Jan 1885 "Notice is hereby given, that the Partnership heretofore subsisting between us the undersigned, Arthur Bateman and Horatio Bateman, under the firm W.Bateman and Sons of No 10 Clements-lane, in the City of London, Merchants, has been dissolved by mutual consent, as and from the 31st day of December, 1884 and that the business will be continued by the said Horatio Bateman alone. All debts due to and owing to the said late firm will be received and paid by the said Horatio Bateman. Dated this 1st day of January 1885. Arthur Bateman and H.Bateman"

1891 Census (age 54) living in St Matthew's Parish, Reigate, Surrey. House called Hill Leigh(?), H<something> Bridge Road with wife, 8 children and 3 servants. Occupation; Living on own means.

Rose is widow by '01, and Claude William's 1899 death he is 'the late'. Eventually got precise DoD from Bateman research.

Ernest wedding is described as of 'Hillcroft, Reigate".


Horatio married Rose Alicia Maria Ellis, daughter of ? Ellis and Unknown, on 3 Jul 1866 in Marylebone, London. (Rose Alicia Maria Ellis was born on 25 Jul 1845 in Paddington, London and died before 1929.)
